February Vacation

When I moved out here to NE years ago, I was very surprised to find they have an extra week of school vacation. The kids here get a week off in Feb. and a week off in April. I just actually found out why. I always thought it was to break up the NEVER-ENDING winter, but actually it came from an effort of conservation. Evidently during the 70's energy shortage they decided to close down the schools for a week in hopes of saving some of that energy. Now I don't really know how much it helped then, but they have never changed the practice.
Last year during this break, my little family and I had the most fun we'd had together in ages, and it does make me sad to think they won't get to do that again with their mommy and daddy. We took the kids camping up the Mohawk Trail. You can rent cabins with wood stoves and electricity for $25.00 a night. So we camped for half the week in the BEAUTIFUL snowy woods, and it really was a great time. I highly reccomend winter cabin camping for anyone who enjoys camping at all. I hope to be able to do it again myself one day with the kids, when they are a little older. This vacation week unfortunately does not hold any adventures at hand. I still have to work and the college does not participate in February vacation. So for me it means finding someone to watch my daughter so I can go about my business as usual.
