My friend Shannon wrote the other day of Africa. There can not be a single soul in America who has not heard of the unspeakable geonocide still taking place in Darfur and Chad. Of the poverty and the Aids epidemic. But yet what can we do as citizens. What can I do as a poor, single, working/student mother. I know when my kids are older and I am a health-care professional of some sort, I would like to move there on a medical mission. But what can I do now?

I can talk about it. I can write about it. I can vote. I can sign petitions. I wish I could call up George Clooney and see if he has any special projects for me (like licking envelopes and such), but his number is unlisted.
But today while reading green as a thistle, I came across this. Goods 4 Girls It is an organization started to provide washable, reusable feminine products to young girls in Africa, so they don't have to miss school during their periods. They actually provide the patterns and instructions, so you can either make the products, or send donations. What a fantastic idea, a cause you can actually get involved in. Hats off to you Goods 4 Girls, hats off to you!

wow thanks for sharing that idea. I feel the same was as you do. I have not been able to get pakistan and afghanistan out of my mind since my last few reads. I wish so badly to be able to do something but have no idea how or were to begin. You're right though, using your voice is a good start.
I thought of you last night. We were reading essays for the Black HIstory/ human rights essay contest and a young girl was talking about this. Of course all of the male administrators were shivering in their seats. God forbid a young girl mention menstruation in an essay!
